fastjet student discount fare to Lusaka from Harare

“Bestie, now we can fly every other month. Did you hear about the new fastjet student discount fare to Lusaka from Harare?” Before I could respond, she went on to say, “Please check your WhatsApp, I have sent you the latest update from fastjet’s TikTok page”.

That was Iris, my friend whom I have known since our high school days, and we are now both studying at a university in Lusaka. Too good to be true, I thought. $89.99 for a one-way flight, and to add to that, you receive a $9.00 discount voucher for your future travel. “I have already made my reservation to fly to Harare from Lusaka for Chido’s birthday on 22 August, back on Monday, 25 August, arriving in time for our 09:00 lecture. Go book your ticket”, she concluded with a big smile that I felt over the phone.

This was a lot for me to take in; an airline launching a student discounted fare. I read the advert again and again. This offer got even sweeter when I read 32 kg of checked luggage. This meant I could have my clothing, extra books and my pillow.

My mother called, full of excitement, after she heard of this promotion from her church WhatsApp group. “I have already told your father about this, and he said, “go and book now”. From this semester onwards, you will be flying on fastjet to Lusaka and back”.

Time moved quickly and I found myself at one of fastjet’s ticket sales shops to book my student discounted ticket to Lusaka. To my surprise, six of the people in the queue were all students studying in Lusaka whom I had seen either on campus or on the overnight bus. We exchanged pleasantries with two of them, who I later learnt were cousins.

“Now this is what I call looking after the market”, one said to the other. I commented, “everyone is talking about this student discount fare”. The queue was moving swiftly, and after moving chairs, the other cousin said, “I guess that is why they say fastjet for everyone”.

Upon sharing my travel date, passport details and student ID, my booking was done by a cheerful fastjet booking agent who had delicately applied make-up. “I have sent your booking confirmation to your WhatsApp and email. Your $9,00 discounted voucher will be shared via email”. She handed me back my change, receipt and passport.

Simple, fast and easy. Despite the queue, the whole process was done in 15 minutes. With my ticket sent to my WhatsApp and bags already packed, I couldn’t wait to be on fastjet’s Wednesday flight to Lusaka.
