From hiking to bird-watching, game drives and picnics overlooking the Ngozi Crater Lake, Mbeya is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of African cities. And best of all, getting there from Dar es Salaam is a short fastjet flight away. Here’s why you need to add Mbeya to your bucket list.
Mbeya is an outdoor lover’s ideal travel destination. It’s a chance to put on your hiking boots, grab a backpack and spend your days exploring the beautiful countryside.
Get active, go on adventures
Start your morning with a hike up Loleza Peak. At a little over 2650 metres high, you’re bound to work up a sweat on this half-day hike. Pack plenty of water as it gets really hot and you can easily dehydrate. We also suggest generously lathering yourself in sunscreen, particular if you have European skin. A nasty burn can render you indoors for the remainder of your trip.
If your legs feel like jello by the time you reach the base, perhaps arrange a drive to Kitulo National Park that afternoon. Spectacular landscapes, flowers as far as the eye can see, waterfalls and butterflies await you. It’s the perfect location for a spot of yoga. If you want to learn about the natural vegetation and which paths to explore, Japhari Ngogo, a local guide and trained botanist is your man?
A must-see is the Mbozi meteorite, one of the largest in the world. Geologists would definitely get a kick out of it.
Take a drive, bring your binoculars
Pre-organise a game drive with Gazelle Safaris. The guides are a walking encyclopaedia, filled with wonderful titbits of information about the local wildlife and landscape. They also know where to find big game, and have eagle eyes that can spot anything from the tiniest dung beetle to a well-camouflaged leopard. Bring your camera with, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Once you’ve given yours legs a rest, it’s time to grab your hiking boots and make your way up to Ngozi Crater Lake. This magnificent dormant volcano is a slice of paradise. The forest is filled with a variety of birdlife, and the lake is safe to cool off in.
